SEGREGATION

Why did people make segregation such a big deal in the 1950s and 1960s ?

"People shouldn't be treated differently just because of the color of their skin," that is what Doctor Martin Luther King Junior believed. One of the main reasons people made segregation such a big deal was because it was a law back then. Martin had grown up with segregation and people being prejudice White people for example got to sit in the front of the bus and the blacks had to sit in the back of the bus, If there were no seats left open for the white people to sit down, then a black person would have to give up one of their seats. Segregation was a big deal back then, but today it is not a big deal at all.

People started using African Americans as slaves way back when. I don't know why anyone would want to force someone to be a slave. Then people started to get past having slaves. Around the 1950s and 1960s white people treated African Americans poorly. This became a law of Segregation (seperation between different races). It was not only between the Whites and Blacks but it was also between any different race or religion. The whites got treated with way more respect than the blacks did. Whites sat in the front of the buses and the blacks had to sit in the back and if no seats were left open for whites the blacks were forced to give up one of their seats. There were water fountains seperated for whites and blacks. They had seperate schools, chuches, stores, you name it. Black people were so fed up with being treated with disrespect and having segregation. That is when Doctor Martin Luther King Junior came and saved the day.

Martin Luther King Junior, an African American grew up in Montgomery, Alabama. He had to grow up being friends with white people, and getting seperated from them because of Segregation. When Martin was little he said that one day he will speak big words. He didn't like segregation at all; he thought it was a way our country shouldn't be. Martin graduated from high school at the age of fifteen. Then he became a pastor at Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama. Martin had words of wisdom, he spoke with loud fluent words.

" Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that." Martin had many amazing quotes. "Take the first step in faith. You don't have to take the whole stair case, just take the first step."

When Dr. Martin Luther King said to take the first step in faith He began to lead marches against segregation. He liked the marches that were non- violent. He gave a very imprtant speech called the I Have A Dream Speech at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C. and he was also the youngest man to win the Nobel Peace Prize!!! Martin is a very famous person and he was shot on April Fourth 1968 by James Earl Ray. All I can say is Doctor Martin Luther King Junior was a very strong man who believed Segregation wasn't right!

To this day America no longer deals with Segregation. We now have public schools and everyone is treated equally. Even though we dont have segregation people still are prejudice. Sometimes people think that they're better than other and thats why they are prejudice. Today people are allowed to bea anywhere with a person who has a different color of skin and people dont make it such a big deal. Segregation is not a law anymore. A little while after Martin died segregation no longer was a problem anymore. For instance at our school there are some white people, Black people, Native Americans, And more. The whole entire world may not live in freedom but America does!

Segregation occured in the Nineteen fifty's and Nineteen sixty's because back then white people thought that they were better than the blacks. Segregation also occured because slavery went on before the civil war and then after the civil war was over people thought they should do something so then people passed the black codes which gave blacks less rights than the whites and segregated them. I think that Segregation back in the day was a wrong thing to do because why would anyone want to treat a race of people differently just because of the color of their skin. Segregation to me is a very Awful thing to put someone through, especially the innocent!!!!
