Personal Flag Values Essay

 

Personal Flag Assignment:

 

1. Choose your three top values from our discussions--those ideals you cherish above all.

 

2. List your values, and sketch a symbol for each one--some logo or drawing that represents what you value.

 

3. Create a Personal Flag of your values by arranging colorful drawings of your values on 81/2 by 11" drawing paper. This will be represent your personal values and be your Personal Flag. You may also create your flag using Inspiration graphics or Microsoft Office clip art on 81/2 by 11" paper set in landscape mode.  (Note: Use any format -- these directions are OLD before web 2.0 !)

 

Personal Values Essay Prewriting List: with example---(see next section)

 

 

1. Open your Growing Up Caring book to pages viii and ix (NSD) or in the text/notes assigned by your teacher (PDS).

2. Choose the three values that are most important to you--those things you will not ever give up or allow to be taken away from you.

3. Make a list of these three values, with at least three spaces between them.

4. Below each value list:

a) why the value is so important to you;

b) words you say to show you value this;

c) behaviors you do to demonstrate this value is important to you.

 

Example of Prewriting:

 

Family

a) Important so they pass things on from one generation to another

b) I share stories of our family to pass on

c) I model being the best I can be so they will want to live up to that; I go to gatherings and games and celebrations.

 

Diligence

d) Important --to work hard to accomplish things and help others

e) Say--I need to get this done first, then I'll be right over

f) Do--I do more each day than I possibly think I can

 

 

Acceptance

g) Important --the world is a large village and accepting others will help prevent problems and wars

h) Say--I accept your idea, yet I do not agree.

i) Do--I learn about other cultures so I understand them and can work with other cultures.

 

Collaboration/Unity

j) Important --again, the world is a large village and working together with others will help prevent problems and wars

k) Say--Will you work with me to solve this?

l) Do--Listen to others ideas, share my ideas, and work together to meet everyone's needs.

 

 

Education

m) Important --education is power--the more I know, the more information I have to solve problems and to understand the world

n) Say--Help me understand, I don't know this. How do you know that?

o) Do--I learn about other cultures; I take classes; I study the world around me on my own; I read and study on my own.

 

 

4. Write an draft explaining each symbol on your flag:

a) what the symbol is,

b) what value the symbol represents,

c) how the symbol represents that value,

d) why the value is important to you, and

e) how your words and behaviors show to others that this is important to you.

5. Share your draft for feedback. Revise for style in langauge choices and clarity in organization and style.

 

5. Create a brochure/voicethread/powerpoint, etc to present your essay information and your personal flag. If you drew your flag, you will need to scan your flag into a jpeg format.

 

6.  Writer Options: When writers have excellent ideas, they often revise and revamp the ideas for other purposes.  Here's a way for you to take all the work and revision from this personal essay, and rethink it for another audience:

 

Final Essay: 300-500 Words on ONE of your values in the model of "This I Believe."
