Revision - to re-vision or re-see your work.
Read your work over several times, each time for a different focus.
First read to find words that could be more specific: nouns.
Second, read to find words that could be more active: verbs.
Third, read to add details: sensory, 5Ws, 5Es
Revision Tips 1:
1. Names
Reread your draft. Look for nouns you can more specifically name.
Examples
Nouns:
A woman = Mrs. Singer
The floor == the smooth tweed carpet
The desk == the metal and yellow plastic desk with attached seat
Stuff in my purse = pens, pencils, coins, paper clips, lipstick, comb
A man == a tall, chunky 50 year old salesman
2. Action Verbs
Eliminate linking and helping verbs (is, am, are, were, was, become) and boring verbs (take, took, ran, run, give, like, love).
Examples
Run = sprint, jog, glide
Walk = amble, saunter
Take = grab
Was pushing = pushed
Is staying = stayed
Look through your Eliminate Dead Verbs packet.
3. Details (Senses; 5Ws, 5Es)
Use details to explain what is seen, touched, smelled, tasted, heard, etc.
“Mrs. Sanchez, her frizzy hair tied up in a messy ponytail and a hairy mole right between her stuffy eyebrows”
