Today I learned that (facts/summary/theme)…

This helps me understand that..

With this information I can

Text: "Buffalo" by Student U

The first buffalo seen was a white buffalo.  The buffalo said to the Indian that his people will come to them in great numbers.  Then he left.  A month later the ground was shaking; the Indians looked and there were millions of buffalo. The Indians grabbed their spears and bows and killed only what they needed to survive.

Man, I wish I cold see a buffalo.  I saw some, but I think someone killed them because they owned them.  They’re becoming extinct so there are barely any around because people kill them for fun.

As soon as the white men heard about the buffalo they came to the America’s to hunt them.  They killed them for their hides and their tongues to make neclaces out of them.  They didn’t take the meat; they just took the hide and tongues and left the meat to spoil. The Indians were getting mad and started to fight with the whites by killing one of them.

Text: "Buffalo" by Student U

One spoke that thousands would come

Indians hunted only what needed

Whites arrived and slaughtered for hide and tongue; made necklaces from ????

Indians tried to protect resource and killed white people

Can people kill buffalo for fun even if they own them?

Learned:

Oral history

Stories told how things started

Explained how things were

People are not always good and helpful; sometimes they are greedy and vicious

If forced, people will fight

Not sure about the owning of buffalo or the facts of the story here.  I will need to do further research.

Connection:

North Dakota had thousands of buffalo; it is one of the places where the Indians depended on every thing about the buffalo to help their survival  -- hide for clothing and utensils; bones for utensils and weapons; brains?  Marrow?  Meat to eat; The Lakota, Dakota, Mandan, Hidatsa, and many more hunted the buffalo until the white settlers were lured into the country by the railroads who promised fertile land in a hospitable environment.  However, the harsh winters proved difficult, and the earliest settlers learned from the native peoples how to survive.

Understanding:

Even today, corporations raid the rainforests and the tribes in the Amazon. Gold is still stolen from them.  Outnumbered and maneuvered, the natives their will lose unless someone speaks up for them, as several international groups are.

Do:

I can research the web and find out current information. I can look for people who are helping and offer my assistance.  I can create a wiki of information so others can help.  Maybe I can start a nonprofit organization to gather donations to help. Saving the people can save the rainforest, and that can help global warming also.

MOTT--White Buffalo

Buffalo Dies with White Lies; Human Ties for Future Lives

White Buffalo by PInedogAs tall as the cottonwood and powerful as lightning, the White Buffalo appeared.

“I am one of many for you, the People,” he may have explained to the awestruck native people of the American Plains back in the beginning times.  Way back when millions of American Indians populated the Great Plains.  Oral stories are histories of what was; today our written stories can bring stories of what will be.

After reading this brief excerpt (Buffalo by Student U) of how the buffalo came to be, announced apparently by one great White Buffalo, I remembered the Lakota, Dakota, Mandan, Hidatsa, and many more who hunted the buffalo until the white settlers were lured into the country by the railroads who promised fertile land in a hospitable environment.  However, the harsh winters proved difficult, and the earliest settlers learned from the native peoples how to survive. My home state of North Dakota had thousands of buffalo; it is one of the places where the Indians depended on every thing about the buffalo to help their survival  -- hide for clothing and utensils; bones for utensils and weapons; and meat to eat, to name a few.  Can you imagine the pounding and shaking of the land when thousands of buffalo stampeded?  The sound, like thunder, must have been deafening. And the sound of silence when the white hunters killed nearly the last buffalo must have been deadening to the souls of the American Indians.

From my earliest school memories, I remember the stories from teachers and museum displayed. It made me ashamed and angry that my ancestors thought so little of animals and fellow humans. Of course, I don’t know if some of my ancestors were ones who protested even back then. I know that my relatives lived either in Canada or the eastern United States during that time.  One of my best friends as an elementary student, Dorothy Carmen, was Native American, but I didn’t know it until I was in junior high. We played almost daily, and she always invited me to her horse-riding birthday parties; we laughed about that this summer.  But still, what could we do?  How does this help us today?

Even today, corporations raid the rainforests and the tribes in the Amazon. Gold is still stolen from them.  Outnumbered and maneuvered, the natives their will lose unless someone speaks up for them, as several international groups are.

I can research the web and find out current information. I can look for people who are helping and offer my assistance.  I can create a wiki of information so others can help.  Maybe I can start a nonprofit organization to gather donations to help. Saving the people can save the rainforest, and that can help global warming also. I can remember the White Buffalo oral history by writing a new history that will save lives of the people and plants of the native Amazon rainforests.

Title

How to Fight A Girl picture from Amazon.comMy book is called How to Fight a Girl by Thomas Rockwell. In this book I learned that Alan lied to billy when he told him that he hit him. He just wanted Billy’s new trail bike. When Billy found out what Alan had done, he jumped him. I also learned that when someone you like comes to your house to ask you to a dance, you don’t say that you are taking your grandmother and then start doing the disco because you would weird the person out. When Amy went home, Rena came over yelling about how dumb Amy was. Then Rena asked Billy if he wanted to make Amy jealous. But he didn’t want to go with either one of them!

This relates to me because if I got a new bike, and one of my friends were to say that I ran over them, I would probably beat them up too. I have watched a movie where the same exact thing happened.

These ideas help me understand the world because now I know that when I get mad at my friends, don’t jump them because it isn’t good for your friendships. Also, I learned not to like a guy that your best friend likes, because that could also ruin your friendship.

I will use this information when I get mad at my friends, so I can remember these good lessons about jealousy that I have mentioned from this book. Jealous can break up friendships!
